1962 - 1962 Chevrolet Impala B/FX

In July of 1962 Chevrolet would celebrate its 50th year in production. To commemorate the special occasion, they produced a limited run of 20 COPO (central office production order) 409 powered, aluminum nosed Impalas, one of which Don received and raced at the NHRA Nationals on Labor Day weekend. Powering the Impala’s was the late season 409 which came equipped with good Z-11, 427 parts. Due to its limited production numbers and heavier weight, the Impala fell into B/FX. Don made the class final where he defeated Dave Strickler in a similarly equipped Impala, 12.93 to a 12.96. Its unknown whether Don drove the car at all after the Nationals, instead focusing his attention on the lighter and quicker Bel-Air. Fellow racer, Hubert Platt who worked alongside Don at Nalley Chevrolet did drive the Impala regularly after the Nationals and match raced it through the end of the season.
