1961 - 1961 Chevrolet Impala 409

By 1961 Don was hooked on Chevys. He had 1959 and 1960, 348-ci powered models that rarely lost. By Don’s own recollection, with his ’59 he had just 2 losses in 75 races. His B/Stock 1960 Fleetmaster won what was the predecessor to the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. The 1961 Impala, powered by the new 409-ci W motor was a just natural progression. Why quit a good thing, right? This is the car that really started Don on his way. He won Stock Eliminator at the NHRA Winternationals, cleanly and shortly after was invited to run super Stock meets and match races across the nation.
