1964 - 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Coupe A/FX

Don ran the Comet wagon into May before debuting the hardtop. It was reported that Don’s fellow Ford/Mercury team drivers were complaining of the wagons advantage (not to mention the Chrysler drivers) and so Fran Hernandez put him in the hardtop. Before the car was even lettered, Don had set the A/FX record with an 11.21. As Dyno would state “I guess the Mopar guys should have quit while they were ahead”.  By the time Don retired the Comet it was recording 10.70 times and lifting the front wheels in every gear. Records show he won 90 percent of his match races in 1964.
