1964 - 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Wagon A/FX

Chevrolet pulled out of racing early in 1963 and by the end of the season Dyno had signed with Mercury. Mercury was just entering the world of racing and the gentleman running the program, Fran Hernandez didn’t hesitate to sign Don. He wouldn’t regret the decision. Working with a limited budget, Fran had Dearborn Steel Tubing build eleven, drag race only, 427 hi-rise powered Comet Caliente’s. In such a limited number, the cars were destined to run NHRA A/FX. Two prototypes were initially built, a station wagon at Don’s suggestion and a hardtop. Success with his Chevy II wagon showed Don the advantage of running a wagon. He’d play was runner-up with his wheel standing Marauder in Factory Stock at the NHRA Winternationals.
