1965 - 1965 Mercury Comet A/FX, later B/A
With the introduction of the SOHC 427 in the 1965 Comet, the continuation of Don’s 90 percent win record was be ensured. The Comet started out as a mid-10 second, carbureted A/FX stormer and by the end of the season it was a dominant match racer sporting an altered wheelbase, Hilborn injection, and feeding on nitromethane. Nine flat times would be realized before Don sold the Comet to Pete Gates. Running the Comet at the Super Stock Nationals in 1966, with tuning and guidance from Don and Earl Wade, Gates broke into the eights with an 8.70 to win the event.
