1970 - 1970 Ford Maverick Pro Stock
Don’s first Pro Stocker was this SOHC powered Maverick. Built in 7 days at M&S Welding in Azusa, California, the car made its debut at the 1970 AHRA Winter Nationals. Early outings were hampered by new car bugs but by mid-season, Don was on fire. Dyno seemed to have world champs, Sox & Martin’s number as he defeated their hemi ‘Cuda numerous time in match races. The Maverick was the most successful Ford Pro Stocker that year, being the only Ford to win a national event. Trivia fact, the Maverick was the first car to set the NHRA Pro Stock elapsed time record when Don ran a 9.81 late in the season at Atco, New Jersey.
