1988-2001 - 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air Pro Mod/Exhibition

In 1988, Don still had the desire to run Pro Stock but without the help of a big dollar sponsor, he couldn’t afford to play, at least not at the level he was used to. It was the burning desire to go big and go fast that saw Don build his Nostalgia Pro Mod 1962 Bel-Air. Don started out with a steel body before adding fiberglass panels. Don called on Victory Race Cars of Victorville, California to complete the stock wheelbase (119 inches) chassis, tin work and wiring. An early W motor measuring 434 inches initially powered the Bel-Air before Don dropped in a 500 cubic inch engine left over from the Woodall Oldsmobile Pro Stocker. After throwing the rods out of that engine, Don borrowed one of Butch Leal’s Pro Stock motors. That engine was returned to Leal and replaced with a 632 cubic inch engine built by Don and Dick Estevez. With a shot of nitrous the Chevy ran a best of 7.42. Don would make his final pass in the Bel-Air in 2001.
